Annunciation Cathedral Detroit: A Brief History
1910- The original charter for Annunciation Church is issued by the State of Michigan. The church is located on Broadway St. in Detroit.
1913-The first Annunciation Church building was erected at 660 Macomb St., Detroit, MI 1914- The Church bought more land to the east of it and built a Greek School. The Parochial School operated full-time until 1931 1962- The 7th Archdiocesan District was established and Bishop Germanos designated Annunciation as his Cathedral 1964- The City of Detroit announces their intentions to buy all the Parish's properties to build a highway. In exchange, the city gives the Parish the one-half city block it now owns and $50,000 1966- The groundbreaking for the new church takes place, and Phase I of construction begins 1968- The basement of the church is completed 1967- Father Ernest Blougouras is assigned to the Church 1976- Phase II of construction begins 1977- Phase II of construction completed 1980- The Michigan Historical Marker was installed 1990- Phase III of construction begins 1993- Phase III is completed, and the Cathedral of Detroit building as we know it is complete 1995- Father Athanas G. George is assigned to Annunciation Cathedral 1996- The cross is installed on the cathedral dome 1999- The first icon, the Platytera, is completed 2000- Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew celebrates a patriarchal Doxology at the Annunciation Cathedral along with Archbishop Demetrios and other Orthodox Hierarchs and Ecumenical Religious Leaders 2005- Completion of the Pantokrator Dome iconography 2007- Addition is completed of the Exo-Narthex and office/conference rooms 2010- 707 East banquet hall is renovated 2015- Father Georgios Manias becomes the new priest of Annunciation Cathedral |
